Happy 5th Birthday CamWorld!
The Lakers regain home court. You have to give Philly props for hanging in there with them for three full games so far. It’s sure a lot more interesting to watch than the Spurs series was.
I’m not sure what’s wrong with me, but I’m definitely in a major funk that I am having a hard time breaking out of. Perhaps it’s work, and the industry that I’m in in general, or perhaps it’s various emotional strains that I have allowed to fester finally catching up with me. Regardless, I have to find a way to break out of this “slump.” Some of the symptoms include laziness beyond my run of the mill kind, a lack of desire to get out of bed in the morning and go to work, and no desire whatsoever to do anything. What helps you break out of a slump? What gets you going again? Let me know.
Great article about the decline of Web businesses of late.
Internet World Magazine: A Bold Fusion. This is an article well worth reading for perspective. It talks about the combined resources of Allaire and Macromedia, and the end to end solution that the company will be able to offer once it has integrated its product lines. One very revealing quote from the article: “Macromedia will sell a version of ColdFusion that includes the JRun engine, but the CFML module will also be licensed to run on top of any other Java 2 Enterprise Edition server.”
Mac OS X vs. Windows 2000 Deathmatch. I’d say this is a pretty fair comparison of the two operating systems based on the criteria that was chosen. Since I have one running each of these operating systems in my bag, I’d have to say that I would place a little more weight on the availability of software for the OS than they have in this article. While Mac OS X is fantastic, some of that is potential currently and nothing more. On the other hand, Windows 2000 is like a pair of shoes that have been broken in over the last two years, all the software I need runs on it. Once X gets up a full head of steam, it will be a better operating system than 2000 or even XP, but we’re at least 6 months away from that, and possibly as many as 12. Who knows what Microsoft will do with that time?
The Standard: Time Has Come for Business 2.0. They plan to merge it with eCompany Now.
Studying up for a Cold Fusion certification exam. Updates to resume tomorrow.
This New York Times article talks about Goto.com in glowing terms for pioneering a revenue stream that is based on placement in searches. My opinion of them as a second rate player in this space is reinforced by this article. The same way I skip those “special advertising sections” that sort of masquerade as editorial in magazines, I’ll go ahead and skip search results that are “enhanced” by commercial placement. here’s a quote from the article that I quite enjoyed: “Even Mr. Gross, GoTo’s founder, says he does not use the service for all his searches. ‘If I want information, I use Google,’ he said.”
I also much prefer the Google model of providing related but sponsored links in another section of the page. In the end, if I were advertising, I would rather have this sort of placement with a search engine that delivers solid information than an entry that has been slipped in by the site on a second rate engine.
Looks like Lawrence is bringing Tomalak’s Realm to a close. It’s a shame, but here’s a big thank you to him for doing such a useful site for so long, and good luck in the future.
Moulin Rouge was incredible. Baz really outdid his earlier efforts with this one. This movie was good on so many levels, I can only describe it as a rich piece of triple chocolate cake. I’ll surely be seeing it again.
Discovering WebObjects (Apple) I got a great response to my posting about WebObjects from Jim today, and I am poring through it now. (Thanks Jim)
PocketMac is a to be released tool for synching PocketPC devices with Microsoft Entourage on the Macintosh. As someone who, even today, experienced the pain of not being able to find any way to connect two such devices, I’m happy about it.
I usually don’t link to new Weblogs anymore. There are too many for me to do that sort of thing any justice. However, Nathan, who I work with and who has good curiousity and interests has started n0d.org. I think you’ll find some really good information there.
Windows users pay for hacker insurance. This is interesting, because of the way that insurance companies do business, it’s hard to refute the fact that NT is, as a matter of fact, a less secure choice than the various unixes. (At least in the case of this particular company’s clients.)
‘IRON CHEF' TO AMERICA. A few comments about this. First, William Shatner? Second, part of what I have enjoyed so much about the Japanese version of Iron Chef has been the bad dubbing and the asian oriented cuisine. So, the bottom line is that I’m not really looking forward to this whatsoever. I would imagine they are counting on the cult popularity of the Iron Chef on the Food Network would lead to increased viewership, I somehow doubt it. (link via Eatonweb)
Transcript: Jeffords statement. Regardless of your political stance, you have to admire this man for his strength of conviction. He is standing up for what he believes in and showing himself to be of independent mind.
I’m interested in learning WebObjects, so I’ll pose the question here because I know there are at least a couple of you who develop with WebObjects. Where do you start, what do you need? Where is there documentation? Where are there books? mail me.
This O’Reilly Network article is a nice overview of where things are currently standing with Java on Mac OS X.
Towel Day In tribute to Douglas Adams.
Taleban to mark Afghan Hindus. Okay, I got chills up my spine reading this article. Sounds eerily like something done at one point in Germany. On the heels of blowing up the Buddhas too. Very disturbing. (via rc3.org)
