Bump Dot Net For the People

I went to Crate & Barrel yesterday to look at beds, and brought my digital camera so I could easily remember what beds I saw in which store. I found one I thought would be a good candidate for my apartment so I took out the camera and shot a couple of pictures of it. Almost immediately, a snotty salesperson descended on me and informed me that they didn’t allow any pictures. When I explained why I needed to take them, he said that I had to have him take Polaroids of the items I was interested in and that I should wait for him to come back and help me. He then went back to helping another customer for almost a half an hour before I finally got angry enough to leave. Guess I won’t be buying my bed, or any of my furniture, at Crate & Barrel.

I can’t ever remember feeling so drained physically, mentally, and emotionally. The strange thing is that I seem to have huge amounts of untapped energy that is carrying me through this time period in my life. I’m deep in the process of breaking down my half of our apartment, and expect to be in my new apartment completely some time next week. Once I do that, I really think that I’ll feel a lot better about things.

#

I’m starting to really pack my stuff for the impending move. Lots of memories keep leaping out of drawers and boxes to make me smile.

#

Crazy weekend. Still trying to recover. Good friends are hard to find, and I’m appreciating mine more every day.

#

Today is jack’s last day, which is a very sad one for me. I’ve really enjoyed working with him over the last six months. Nine of us took him out for a Thai lunch and had some fun.

#

I went with some friends to see Kids in the Hall last night. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, I think partially because I needed to laugh very badly.

Almost everyone who sent me new apartment advice said I should shop at IKEA. Unfortunately, they aren’t very Internet friendly, make it very difficult to get a catalog, and don’t have a store in the Atlanta area. Fortunately, Sara, one of my fearless co-workers(I guess you would have to be fearless to work with me, just ask Jack why he’s really leaving.) brought me in the catalog she had at home. When I whipped out the floor plan for my new apartment, voila no measurements of any kind. That makes no sense whatsoever.

Anger was a place to hide.

#

WebVan went preview in Atlanta today. Yeeha I say.

#

Enough with the meetings already.

Some interesting changes coming in my life these next few weeks. I’ve been making these sad little lists of all the things I will need to buy for my new apartment.(I’ll be moving in two weeks.) It’s much smaller than the one we are in now, so some things are also going to have to go. I think this is where I’ll be making the transition to only laptops. Got ideas for neat furniture or fixtures for a new bachelor’s apartment? Send them along. I’m buying all new furniture, so any hints or suggestions of good places to do that in either the real or virtual worlds would be helpful.

Amount of money in loose change I exchanged for bills this weekend: $124.00

The people at MacSurfer have started a new site named TechNN which is a similar sort of thing for generalized technology news.

#

Jim is doing some interesting things with the data from Weblogs.com.

Small World post number 24: Paul goes to see Ani DiFranco last night, and Hamill on Trial opens up. When I lived in Albany, NY, Ed Hamill worked in the coffee shop that was across the street from my apartment. Ed’s a great, friendly, funny, intelligent guy whose company I enjoyed very much. I haven’t seen or talked to him in years and have since moved to Atlanta and lost touch with most of my Albany friends.

More on Deep Leap from around the Web. First, their feature list, which is quite interesting. Lane posts their vision to the Userland Discussion site. One day into using it(despite literally begging Ben for access at SXSW), and I’m still exploring. The only thing I really wish I had was more screen real estate to work with on my laptop.

I always seem to feel better when I sing. I’m sitting in my office right now, which is completely empty, and singing loudly while I clean up things and do some content management coding for a project. It really seems to help me quite a bit. In fact, I can say that, in the most difficult times of my life, it has been music that has always helped me through.

Numerous people have pointed out the links at the top of the page are broken. I’ll try to get to this as soon as possible, but with things the way they are in my life right now, this site can’t be any sort of priority for me. One of the problems is that I have archives dating back to November, 1997, and I want to make sure that this is the last time I have to do this as it’s quite time consuming and boring.

#

mmmmmm Deep Leap. It’s a new Web app worth checking out. It manages your bookmarks and stuff or something. Congratulations to the Deep Leap team. I could tell they had labored hard on this project when I met them in Austin.

Kozmo.com hit with lawsuit. I find this very disturbing. I don’t think that kozmo deserves the kind of label this implies. They are available in a few markets, and they should get to choose where they operate their business. Does this mean they should operate in every neighborhood in every town they go to whether or not that neighborhood would be profitable? They aren’t a very big company at this point, and I don’t think that free enterprise should be messed with like this.

#

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank dlog for the nice comments about this new design, albeit a little late. Now if I could just finish the rest of it.

#

You can now email me encouragement, or just plain bug me at my wireless device wherever I happen to be at the moment. The email address is palm@$bump.net.(remove the dollar sign for correct address, I don’t want the spam to get me wherever I happen to be.)

#

I’m pretty excited about UltraDev. It’s about time that someone developed a tool that is capable of working with Enterprise level Web databases and dynamic environments that is cross platform. I’m still a code person where I don’t want to rely on Wizards or visual environments for this stuff. First, because of the level of control and second because it is much easier to fix things that you wrote instead of having to figure out what the program generated for you.

#

I have to thank everyone who has been mailing me about my situation and encouraging me over the last three weeks. Your words have meant quite a lot to me.

#

I seem to be experiencing technical difficulties this morning. I can’t figure out if the problem is a Blogger problem or a bump problem. Stay tuned.
